Garbage is one of the main problems in Nepal. It is everywhere: On streets, around houses, in schools and fields, on mountain slopes and in rivers.
When visiting a school facility, we discussed the problem with the teachers. Together with the students, we grabbed the rare baskets and started to clean the school courtyard. They collected literally everything - plastic, batteries, paper, including wood and leaves! Thus we realised that the youngsters were not aware of what was considered garbage. We were also shocked to see how many waste batteries people simply throw away!
As a part of the garbage collecting program, we asked a poor farmer to collect waste batteries. In return, he received a bag of rice. We also received a big bag, but full of waste batteries which we took back to Kathmandu for proper disposal.
Now the challenge for HECAC will be to find a solution for proper disposal of all the different kinds of garbage.
